TV reality shows have become a staple on both network and satellite TV. We, as an audience are both fascinated and reviled by the antics of these faux celebrity TV personalities. The most trivial things they say and do are magnified under the auspices of HD technology and a roving, never retreating camera lens. These inside peeks reel us in, hook, sinker and line. It's unsurprising than that 'The Real Housewives of New York City,' which you can catch on Bravo via your satellite TV subscription is such a mesmerizing piece of reality TV goodness. The show is modeled after the popular ABC drama Desperate Housewives, except of course, these aren't your regular domestic housewives; no, that would be much too mundane. Rather these NYC housewives are rich and vain and all things you love to hate.

There's Ramona Singer who is some sort of fashion designer, who buys excess items and then resells it to discount outlets. Then there's Alex Mccord whose husband is a hotel manager, and whose family employs a French au pair and vacations in the haven for rich New Yorkers-the Hamptons. Next, meet Jill Zarin who's money comes from furniture. There's a countess named Luan de Lesseps. And finally, we have one Bethenny Frankel, who has actually appeared on the Apprentice with Martha Stewart and has somewhat of a spotty social history.

These 'housewives,' only one of them is a real housewife, per say, and she just also happens to be a countess too, the rest have real working jobs, spend an inordinate amount of time taking care of themselves. This means spending large piles of cash on expensive designer clothes, having a girls' night out and spending even more piles of cash on drinks and designer dinners, getting spa treatments, sitting in front of the tube watching satellite TV favorites and ordering in expensive dinners, or flying off to some tropical local to cheer yourself up after having had a bad day.

This docu-soap, as Bravo describes it, is interesting in the sense that these are all rather new socialites, who aren't the darlings of high society, well perhaps everyone except the countess. It's also rather intriguing that these people have gotten wealthy off upholstery, angel bracelets and hotel rooms, rather than banking or the internet. But given the fairly boring manner in which they or their husbands have made their wealth, the show moves on to exhibiting how they spend all that money.

And it's all fairly obvious, sports cars, jewelry, top of the line shoes, tennis lessons and private schools. They have home theaters with the large, HD flat screens bigger, than anything you've seen before. They live in big, fancy town houses and small villas. That being said, these are satellite TV reality stars; they really aren't that chic. They have a whiff of desperation about them.

But there's the appeal, despite their vulnerability and their brashness, we like to watch them spend money because, it's something most of us cannot indulge in so easily.
